The reason why I am sharing this with you is that with the music from the Disney adaptation of Mulan on stage, I was also given some specific information about how they stayed true to the Chinese opera when composing the score for the stage version. This article gives some history, and most interestingly explains the basic characters of the Chinese opera. I know later in the course I will be discussing some of these characters, and the specific instruments that represent them in the music. Something else that I found interesting in this article was the section on Chinese opera superstitions. It is a lengthy article, but full of good insights. Check it out! :)
